A pale for a palisade with a web and two side sections that extend from the web at an angle of greater than 70° and less than or equal to 90°. The cross section can be a U shape or a W shape where the side walls are connected to further webs. The side walls can have a strengthening element that can be in the form of a corrugation, rib or projection that extends the length of the portion. The free edge can have a lip and the webs of the side portions can be flat, arched or pointed in shape. The pale can also have a security head and satisfy the requirements of British Standard 1722-12: 2006. It can also be made of metal and formed by cold rolling or press braking. Also disclosed is a fence with at least one rail extending between two posts with at least one pale and a kit of parts.
