A drive, for a door or window closer, comprising a housing 12 with a cylinder 20 in which a spring biased piston 18 slides and divides the cylinder into fluid chambers. The housing includes a plurality of successive inlet/outlet bores/holes 24 through which hydraulic fluid flows; the bores/holes are distributed along the cylinder to be passed over and successively sealed or released by the piston as it slides. An adjustable valve having an opening 26 for selective communication with bores 24 adjusts hydraulic functions of the drive such as a closing delay or opening damping. Holes 24 may be aligned in a row; the fluid aperture 26 in the valve may be a plurality of holes or slots, the valve may include an inclined slot 26. The valve may be a captive valve held for rotational adjustment to adjust aligned apertures and change the fluid path.
