A cable breakaway system works in two stages. An excessive load on the cable (700, Fig 2) causes shear pins (45, Fig 4) to break. This applies a load to cable cores 1, pulling the lugs (3a, Fig 5) or bearing surfaces (99, Fig 5) of connectors (300, Fig 5) against the top 113 of main body 108 and causing bolt (3b, Fig 5), stud (4c, Fig 5) or cable core (1d, Fig 5) to break. So that body (2a, Fig 5) and sleeve (2b, Fig 5) do not absorb some of the shock, these parts are cut with blades 111 and pushed out of the way as cable core 1 is pulled through channel 109 of the main body. An explosive charge (23b, Fig 10) may be used to disconnect the cable when desired. The breakaway may be used for a wind turbine on a floating structure.
