Including a flexible membrane 102 (which may be waterproof and/or breathable) attached to multiple cords 104 which lie in one direction. With a number of battens 106, which lie in a second orthogonal direction and which are attached to at least one of the cords. One set of the battens 108a is offset to a second set of battens 108b at at least one end. A third set of non-aligned battens may be added, and the pattern of the battens may be repeatable. The membrane may overlap 114 the battens along one or two adjacent sides. One set of battens may extend over the edge of the membrane and one other of the sets of battens may align with the membrane edge. A roof comprised of these assemblies and a method of laying the roof is also disclosed.
