Apparatus and method for the carbon neutral processing of limestone, comprising a furnace having an annular outer vessel 12 defined by concentric inner 13 and outer cylindrical walls 14, with an inner chamber providing heating element 26 within the inner wall and a reaction chamber between the walls. The outer vessel has an inlet 22 for limestone and outlet 33 for carbon dioxide and calcium oxide, which may comprise a fan to create a pressure depression, a gas-permeable membrane, and gas valves. The reaction chamber may have a curved blade 32, e.g. a spiral, to channel limestone. An energy source 27, which may be carbon neutral, e.g. nuclear, may supply heat and/or electricity to the inner chamber. The invention is designed to allow for CO2 sequestration for carbon-neutral construction.
