A trapdoor safety device 1 is provided for securing to an underside of a trapdoor. The device 1 comprises a proximity sensor 2 such as a PIR sensor; a light source 64; an alert mechanism 17; and a tilt sensor 7. The tilt sensor 7 is operative to change the operational state of the proximity sensor 2 when the trap door is opened. The proximity sensor 2 is arranged to detect the proximity of a person and activate the alert mechanism 17 and/or energise the light source in order to illuminate the trapdoor and/or trapdoor opening when a proximity event it detected. The alert mechanism may be activated when a trapdoor securement means is compromised. The securement means may comprise at least one holster for receiving at least one bolt in order to secure the trapdoor. The device may comprise a transmitter for transmitting a message to a remote mobile device when the trap door is opened or when the trapdoor securement means is compromised.
