Sintered polycrystalline cubic boron nitride material
A polycrystalline cubic boron nitride material which comprises (by volume): 30-90 % cubic boron nitride particles dispersed in 10-70 % of a matrix material which comprises at least one titanium compound (e.g. titanium carbide or titanium nitride) and/or one aluminium compound and spherical, plate-shaped or needle-shaped precipitates or grains of zirconium nitride and/or vanadium nitride with a mean largest dimension of not more than 1 micron. Also a method of making a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride material by milling together cubic born nitride, a vanadium-containing powder (e.g. vanadium nitride) and/or a zirconium-containing powder (e.g. zirconium nitride) and powder containing aluminium and/or titanium (e.g. titanium carbide and aluminium). The milled powders are pressed into a green body which is sintered at a temperature in the range 1800-2300 0C at a pressure in the range 7.0-8.5 GPa. The material can be used to make cutting tools and/or tools for turning, milling, grinding or drilling.
