Active flood defence system with low environmental impact
The barrier is a wall to prevent movement of water in use from a flooded area 10 on a 1st side 130 to a protected area 20 on a 2nd side 140, having at least one pump 30 for pumping water from the 2nd side to the 1st, and one or more power harvesting means, preferably turbines 40, to generate power from the flow of water in the flooded area e.g. a flooded river, wherein harvested power is used to power pumps. An internal area 150 of the wall houses pump pipe 120, with inlet 100 and outlet 110, and turbine 40, which is located in conduit 50 which extends between upstream and downstream apertures (90). The system may include a battery 70 to store excess generated power. Alternatively power may be stored mechanically using a clutch (80). The barrier may be modular such that it can be temporarily assembled and deconstructed during flooding. The protected area may be a stream which normally feeds a river (the flooded area), wherein the water height differential is reversed during flood (i.e. the river level is higher than the stream).
