A system 100 for opening and closing a barrier such as a window 104, 114, 118, 122 comprising a first microphone 132 for detecting a first noise (142) from a first, e.g. external, environment, a barrier actuator (106) configured to move the barrier, a transmitter (152, Fig 1B) arranged to transmit a spectrum of the first noise from the microphone, a controller 140 configured to receive the spectrum from the transmitter and transmit an actuation signal to the actuator in response to the spectrum exceeding a predetermined threshold requirement so as to close the barrier. Preferably there is a second microphone 136 which may detect an internal environmental ambient noise. The controller may compare the noise signal from second microphone and stop the window closing when the noise meets an ambient threshold. There may multiple external and internal microphones for controlling multiple rooms in a building. The system may include a central database of noise signatures with a self-learning module. Also disclosed is a vent with a damping portion and attenuating portion.
