A train toilet system comprising: a toilet compartment 100 with a compartment door 102, a door sensor 106, an air freshener device 108 activatable to spray air freshener 114, and a controller 104. The controller is configured to activate the air freshener device when the door sensor indicates that the door is open. In some embodiments, a proximity sensor such as pressure plates (114, figure 4) detects the approach of a person.
