A support unit comprising a base member 12, a platform member 14, an external support post 20 and an internal support post 22, wherein the external post can move in an axial direction. The posts comprise openings 24, (34, fig 6D), and receive a releasable retaining member 42 that extends through the openings, arranged such that the platform is supported in an elevated position when installed and the platform can drop towards the base when removed. The openings are preferably elongate slots of different heights. The retaining member may be a detent pin and preferably has a tension line (58, fig 7) for removal of the pin and to aid in removing the support from under the foundation. Further disclosed is a support system comprising multiple support units and a tension line, and a method of forming a foundation.
