Stair assistance device
There is provided a stair assistance device 1 for assisting a person to climb up and down stairs, the device 1 comprising: a handle 2; a saddle 4 for engagement 5 with a guide rail 8 mounted alongside the stairs, the saddle 4 being connected to the handle 2; and an engagement rack 6 for attachment to and extending along the length of the guide rail 8, the saddle 4 being engaged with the engagement rack 6; wherein the saddle 4 is arranged for sliding motion along the guide rail 8 and for selectively preventing motion of the handle 2 and saddle 4 along the guide rail 8, the saddle 4 comprising: a releasable ratchet mechanism 26 comprising a pawl 32 engageable with a ratchet 30 which, when engaged, prevents movement of the handle 2 in a downstairs direction and allows movement of the handle 2 in an upstairs direction; and wherein the handle 2 is coupled to the pawl 32 such that a predetermined movement of the handle 2 relative to the guide rail 8 will disengage the pawl
