A safety alert system for roadside use comprising a plurality of activator units A-D for location in spaced apart positions on the roadside, each activator unit comprising a switch 30 for activation by a user, wherein activation of a first activator unit causes a limited predetermined number of upstream units to also be activated. Each activator unit may further include a signal generator capable of generating, upon activation, a series of outputs of the predetermined number. Each activator unit may further comprise outputs connected to corresponding inputs of the adjacent upstream unit. The units may further comprise a signal transmitter for generating a signal for receipt by one or more vehicles passing the unit. The activator units may further comprise an associated vehicle actuator element such that the switch can be activated by contact from a vehicle.
