A flooring support tray 10 having a support plate 12 for supporting a flooring element (52, Figs. 3-5) thereon, the plate having first and second open channels 22,30 defined by downwardly extending 1st and 2nd support walls (24,32, Fig. 2) , 1st and 2nd base walls (26,34), and upwardly extending 1st and 2nd side walls (28,36) which extend upwardly beyond the plane of the support plate 12 for retaining the flooring element (52) laterally thereon. The support includes a longitudinally extending third open channel 18 provided by a preferable U or V-shaped base wall (20, Fig.2), separating 1st and 2nd portions 14, 16 of the support plate 12. The support may comprise a folded sheet of galvanised steel or aluminium. In use the upwardly extending side walls do not extend beyond the height of an relatively thicker element held in the tray, and so are not visible. The tray may be used to provide structural support to brittle decking flooring elements e.g. porcelain or ceramic tiles, or composite or timber planks or slabs etc. In use channels provide rigidity and drainage.
