A fire hydrant adaptor plate system comprises a primary adaptor plate 5 having a central main opening 7 and a plurality of elongate apertures 8a-c radially arranged around the main opening for securing bolts. The elongate apertures allow the plate to be attached to different types of fire hydrants for the connection of a replacement bonnet assembly when carrying out inspection, monitoring and/or repair functions. Three apertures may be provided and they may be discorectangular in shape. The width of the apertures may taper to an end closest to the opening. One of the apertures may comprise a notch 9 to identify it as being different from the other apertures. The system may include a secondary adaptor having a central main opening and a plurality of projections which at least partially overlap the apertures of the primary plate in use. A method of adapting a hydrant comprises the step of attaching a plate to a fire hydrant using bolts secured through the apertures of the primary plate. The method may include the use of a secondary plate to reduce the leakage of water.
