A method of preparing a silica or alumina wet gel for use in the preparation of an aerogel or aerogel slurry. The method comprises providing a precursor comprising an alkylsilane and/or a metal alkoxide, e.g. aluminium tri-sec-butoxide, and reacting the precursor in the presence of a sol-gel solvent and an alkaline earth metal oxide solid gelation agent to form a wet-gel. The oxide may be calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, strontium oxide or barium oxide. The wet gel may be blended to form a slurry mixture and a drying agent may be added. The method may further comprise introducing carbon dioxide gas to the wet-gel or slurry mixture to form an aerogel or aerogel slurry. A kit may comprise an alkylsilane and/or a metal alkoxide, an alkaline earth metal oxide solid, an alcohol, and instructions for performing the method.
