A roof slate retainer 20 comprising limbs (24, 26) between which an edge of a roof slate 22 is received and which grip the upper and lower faces of the slate and an engagement member 36 which projects downwardly therefrom so that it can engage an upper edge of a roof lath or slate below to retain the slate in position on a roof. The engagement member may be resiliently deformable so that it can be deformed upwardly by a slate beneath while being positioned and can spring back when it has passed over said slate. The limbs may comprise shaped or textured gripping features and may be cantilevered from a spine 28 and be resilient such that they are moved apart by the insertion of a slate. The retainer may be unitarily formed from metal or plastic. The retainer can be used with slates made of bitumen-impregnated asbestos, fibre cement or slate. Also provided is a method of installing a slate in a chosen row of a pre-existing roof comprising mounting two retainers on opposing edges of the slate then sliding an upper portion of the slate beneath slates of the row above until the engagement members engage.
