Apparatus for heating water in a pool, pond or spa comprises a heating chamber 24 having an inlet (20, figure 1) for connection to a water source, and an outlet (22, figure 1) for discharge of water into the pool or spa. Respective pipe adaptors 16,18 may be provided. An electric heating element 32 is disposed in relation to the heating chamber to heat water in the chamber during its passage therethrough. Ideally three elements are provided to form three heating units 28. A single-point photoelectric level sensor 38 (e.g. infrared probe) detects the presence or absence of water in the vicinity of the element. Where three elements are provided, the level sensor is ideally provided with the element nearest the inlet. Electrical control circuitry 36 is connected to the single-point photoelectric level sensor and to the electric heating element and prevents electrical supply to the element when an absence of water is detected by the level sensor. The circuitry may be connected to an inlet temperature sensor and outlet temperature sensor, ideally in the form of NTC thermistors 48, to disconnect electrical supply to the element when a safety temperature (e.g. 52°C) is exceeded.
