The invention relates to a plough for placing an elongate object 4 (cable) into a floor of a body of water. The plough comprises trench forming means 10 (plough share) for forming a trench in the floor of the body of water, first support means 12, 14 (skids) and second support means 20 (cable support means). The first support means is for engaging the floor of the body of water and for supporting the trench forming means. The second support means is moveable between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the second support means supports part of the elongate object above the trench forming means during formation of the trench by allowing part of the elongate object to rest on the second support means (Fig 2). In the second position, a part of the elongate object can be loaded onto the second support means (Fig 5). The second position is lower than the first position. Preferably, the second support means comprises a plurality of rollers or wheels. A method of placing an elongate object into the floor of a body of water is also described.
