PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide materials that are relatively light and that combine desired mechanical properties and insulating characteristics, articles and methods for their manufacture and use.SOLUTION: The present invention provides composites such as self-supporting rigid composites that have low thermal conductivity and attractive mechanical properties. Methods for preparing such composites include, for example, combining an aerogel-containing material with a binder to form slurry and allowing the slurry to harden. At least part of the hardening process is conducted under compression.
