PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a honeycomb structure that contains as a main component a ceria-zirconia composite oxide to enhance reliability of a catalytic converter for an automobile, gives sufficient cleaning performance using a small amount of a catalyst, and maintains mechanical strength.SOLUTION: A honeycomb structure 1 is made of raw material grains having a ceria-zirconia composite oxide as a main component and a material containing an inorganic binder to bond the raw material grains, and includes many cells 12 partitioned by cell walls 11. The honeycomb structure 1 is composed of at least two regions 13, 14 having each a different macro porosity formed by grain boundary defects in the cell extending direction X of the cell walls 11. A region A of a relatively high macro porosity is located at one end side of the cell walls 11, while a region B of a relatively low macro porosity is located at the other end side.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
【課題】自動車用触媒コンバータの信頼性を向上させるセリア−ジルコニア複合酸化物を主成分とし、少ない触媒使用量で十分な浄化性能が得られ、機械的強度を維持できるハニカム構造体の提供。【解決手段】セリア−ジルコニア複合酸化物を主成分とする原料粒子と、原料粒子同士を接合する無機バインダを含む材料で構成され、セル壁11で区画された多数のセル12を有するハニカム構造体1は、セル壁11のセル伸長方向Xにおいて、粒界欠損により形成されるマクロ気孔率が異なる少なくとも2つの領域13、14からなり、セル壁11の一方の端部側に、相対的にマクロ気孔率が大きい領域Aを備え、他方の端部側に、相対的にマクロ気孔率が小さい領域Bを備えるハニカム構造体1。【選択図】図1
