To provide a steel sleeper that does not cause ballast outflow during compaction work of a track bed, prevents the multiple tie tamper from interfering with the compaction work, and exhibits an appropriate lateral resistance.SOLUTION: A steel sleeper 100 comprises: an upper face plate 10 to which rails are fastened; a body part having a front plate 13 and a rear plate 14 respectively extending in a hanging shape from a front edge 11 and a rear edge 12 of the upper face plate 10; and a left side face plate and a right side face plate 18 respectively extending in an inclined hanging shape from a left side edge and a right side edge 16 of the upper face plate 10. The distance between the front plate 13 and the rear plate 14 is constant, and an end edge opening of the left side face plate and an end edge opening 19 of the right side face plate 18 are located below a lower edge 13b of the front plate 13 and a lower edge 14b of the rear plate 14.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8
