To provide a heat insulator excellent in durability.SOLUTION: A heat insulator having a heat insulating member is equipped with a base material including carbon fibers, and a pyrolytic carbon layer including pyrolytic carbon, which is formed on a surface of the base material. The heat insulating member has a cylindrical shape having an inner space storing a heating body. The heat insulating member has a first main surface that is an outer peripheral surface on the heating body side, a second main surface that is an outer peripheral surface on the opposite side to the heating body, and an end surface that connects the first main surface and the second main surface. An exposing portion in which the pyrolytic carbon layer is not formed on the surface of the base material exists in at least one place selected from a group composed of the end surface of the heat insulator, an area where length from the end surface of the first main surface of the heat insulating member is up to 20% of the heat insulating member, and the second main surface of the heat insulating member.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
