In one aspect, an apparatus includes a skimming element holder; a skimming element connected to the skimming element holder; a base member connected between the swimming pool cover and the skimming element, where pivot of the base member pivots the skimming element holder and the skimming element; and a skimming guide connected to the base member, where the swimming pool cover defines a swimming pool plane; the base member automatically actuates the skimming element through the swimming pool plane, and immediately before ending the traversal along the swimming pool plane, the base member again automatically actuates through the swimming pool plane opposite to the previous direction of automatic pivot of the base member.
