A hydraulic pump system provided with: a hydraulic pump the discharge flow rate of which can be changed; a regulator device for adjusting the discharge flow rate of the hydraulic pump; an operation device having an operation tool; a lock-switching input unit for canceling a locked state of the operation tool; an unload valve, the opening area of which can be changed to adjust the discharge pressure of the hydraulic pump; and a control device for controlling the movement of the unload valve. When a prescribed operation condition is satisfied, the control device reduces the opening area of the unload valve and thereby increases the discharge pressure of the hydraulic pump, and after the control device has increased the discharge pressure of the hydraulic pump, the regulator device increases the discharge flow rate. The operation condition includes the cancellation of the locked state of the operation tool by the lock-switching input unit.
