Study of a Hot-Mix Asphalt with Rice Husk Ash
Throughout the world the final and environmentally correct disposal of solid residues is a challenge. The present study aims to analyze the incorporation of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as a mineral filler in an asphalt mixture for pavements. For this purpose, the Marshall design was carried out in order to determine the control mixture. Subsequently, two types of asphalt mixtures were manufactured, with replacement of 50% and 100% of the mineral filler of the stone aggregates by RHA. That is, 3% and 6% of RHA were incorporated in the granulometry of the mixture. The volumetric compositions were analyzed and tests were carried out to evaluate the response of the mixtures to the action of the monotonic load (Marshall test and indirect tensile strength (ITS)). Additionally, the Cantabro test was done in order to analyze the resistance to abrasion. The results show that the use of RHA in an asphalt mixture, as proposed, is feasible from the technical and environmental point of view, because it allows a suitable form of disposal for the residues.
