Extinguishing Mechanism and Countermeasures of Lithium Battery Vehicle Fires
We develop an effective method for extinguishing lithium battery fires, which have become a significant safety concern as the popularity of electric vehicles grows. We tested seven fire-fighting methods, finding that combining a fire blanket with a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher was the most effective. Although water reduces the temperature, it also reacts with active metals and chemicals in the battery, causing further damage. We also investigated the rescue procedure in lithium battery fire and developed three types of fire extinguishing devices specifically for electric vehicle fires in alleys and underground parking lots. The methods guide local manufacturers to enhance public safety and support the fire brigade in Taiwan. Given that lithium battery fires are complex and pose unique challenges, the methods contribute to the development of new fire rescue equipment and procedures for firefighters.
