Spatiotemporal Investigation of Intersection Crashes in Victoria, Australia
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) has always been a major concern globally. These concerns arise from the fact that the crash counts are increasing, especially in low and middle-income countries since they account for 93% of road fatalities. In this research, a trend analysis is conducted for vehicle collisions that occurred on intersections in Victoria, Australia from 2018 till 2020. The variables studied include the accident details, light conditions, and severity of the crashes. Moreover, heat maps and hotspot analysis were performed and visualized using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. The results of the analysis showed that the cross-traffic type of accidents and accidents that occur during the daytime contributes to the highest number of crashes. Furthermore, it is observed that there is a decline in the number of crashes from 2018 to 2020, with 2018 showing the greatest number of accidents on intersections. The results of the heat maps revealed that the city of Melbourne had the densest number of crashes.
