BIM (Building Information Modelling) Enabled FM (Facilities Management) in Metaverse: A Systematic Review
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is extensively being embraced in projects in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. BIM is a process that supports the entire life cycle of a project, starting from inception until demolition. Even though the importance and need of BIM at different stages in the construction projects have been recognized, there are limited studies on the adoption of BIM in Facility Management (FM). In this view, BIM is required to adapt and mature by integrating with new technologies so that it is able to support FM in a much better way. A concept that is being researched and adopted in recent years is the metaverse. Metaverse is a three-dimensional virtual world. The concept of metaverse combines digital technologies so that the data which is produced out of it is meaningful, traceable, and reliable. Though there has been some research on the concept of metaverse covering different phases of project lifecycle, there are seldom any studies on its implementation on the FM phase specifically. To address this gap, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted. Through this review, this paper supplies a summary of the current state-of-art for BIM enabled FM in metaverse. The aim of this paper is to identify the potential applications and benefits of BIM enabled FM in metaverse which can help the facilities managers and the field workers stay connected; and manage the tasks more efficiently through a commonly shared virtual environment. The findings of this paper contribute to expanding the limited body of evidence by enlightening the important research gaps and helping to identify directions for future research.
