Chettinad Vernacular Architecture – A Sustainable Paradigm of Modern Design Challenges
Vernacular architecture is characterized by the fact that it is regionally and climatically determined, while at the same time focusing on sustainability and simplicity. The focus is on the palaces of Chettinad in Tamil Nadu, India, where the use of local stone in traditional building methods is often seen as excessive. Still, it is considered less harmful to the environment due to the use of local materials and traditional techniques that improve natural lighting and ventilation and reduce the loss of thermal energy for cooling purposes. The modernization process and the centrifugal tendencies of cities have often brought technical and social problems that old buildings of indigenous architecture should not have. There is an immediate threat to these historic buildings. In this context, the study developed a concept called “Vernacular Modernism,” which favors its own culture over others by adopting a modernist style, thus achieving better results in terms of energy efficiency, accessibility, and choice. These mansions today face the challenge of preserving their architectural integrity and historical significance by implementing sustainable factors, overcoming the challenges faced by the Chettinad mansions, and preserving them in the modern architectural context without compromising their architectural integrity, design techniques, or historical significance.
