Natural Ventilation to Improve the Thermal Performance of Schools in UAE
Utilizing of natural ventilation has a potential of energy savings and indoor comfort improvement. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with DesignBuilder and ANSYS Fluent software are used to investigate the energy performance and the indoor air temperatures of several alternative scenarios of a school building in Dubai for a purpose of reducing the buildings' cooling energy demand. Several alternatives of the school building are generated based on the size of openings, orientation and solar shading. The results show that natural ventilation can't be used as a sole system to satisfy the cooling energy demand due to high outdoor air temperature and the low wind conditions in summer. On the other hand, it can be used as a secondary system that offers a significant potential to improve the levels of internal comfort in buildings. Internal temperature reductions of 5-7°C are achieved depending on the size of windows (inlets and outlets) and the orientation of windows in regards of prevailing wind.
