Shell Base Mixes and Characteristics
Soil aggregate mixes are widely used in the construction of highways in Alabama as base and sub-base materials. Traditionally the aggregate portions of the mixes are, gravel, crushed stone or slag. In the southern part of Alabama there is a shortage of the traditional aggregates which results in high costs for this type of construction. The purpose of this project was to determine how effective reef shell could be when used as a stabilizing material in soil aggregate mixtures. The project also had a long range overall objective to determine layer thickness requirements of soil-shell mixtures as base and/or sub-base materials in a flexible pavement structure in accordance with the Alabama State Highway Department design criteria. This report covers only the work that was performed to determine the effectiveness of the reef shell as a stabilizing material in soil-shell mixtures by means of laboratory tests. (Author)
