Rehabilitation Guideline 1982. 9: Guidelines for Structural Assessment
These guidelines for structural assessment explain the methods and approaches used to evaluate structural systems in existing buildings for determining the building's continued use or rehabilitation. The guidelines address the assessment of common building structural systems such as masonry - bearing walls and simple wood, iron and steel, and reinforced concrete frames. However, the assessment process and testing methods apply, in principle, to all structural types and combinations. The structural assessments are designed to confirm that the buildings are structurally safe for their existing or proposed uses. For each structural material, the guidelines cover specific problems associated with that material and methods of testing and material. Information sources are also given for each material. Appendices discuss the history of structural safety code provisions, the effects of fire on structural systems, wood - inhabiting organisms, and laws governing the inspection and repair of building facades.
