Rock Strength From Failure Cases: Powerhouse Slope Stability Study, Fort Peck Dam, Montana
The slope adjacent to the powerhouses at Fort Peck Dam has been unstable since 1934 when its toe was excavated during construction of the reservoir outlet works. The short term objective of this study was to provide information on the history and behavior of the slope for use in planning measures to stabilize it. The long term objective of this study was to gain a better understanding of the behavior of slopes in the Bearpaw shale, a typical soft rock of the Upper Missouri River Valley. The Fort Peck project and the site geology are briefly described. Stabilization measures for the powerhouse slope are presented and analyzed. Recommendations are given for futher study of the slope in connection with detailed planning of stabilization measures.
