Effects of Vibratory Loads on Piles
Extremely massive structures are required for conducting static checkouts of the Saturn V space vehicle. The large forces, both static and dynamic, to be imposed by such operations will require extremely high stability of the structure and particularly of its foundation. Investigations were conducted to obtain information relative to the behavior of piling supporting the structures when subjected to static and dynamic loadings. The piling consisted of steel H-piles (14 BP73) and 14-in.-diameter pipe filled with portland cement concrete. The piling was driven or set to a depth of approximately 88 ft, penetrating into a dense sand layer. Field tests were conducted by statically loading both single piles and a cluster of four piles, and subjecting certain of them to dynamic loads.
