Pass Christian Harbor, Mississippi (Maintenance Dredging)
The action is to maintain Pass Christian Harbor seven feet deep, 1,000 feet long and 700 feet wide within the limits of the existing bulkheads and breakwaters constructed by local interests, and the 100-foot wide entrance channel to the seven-foot contour in the Mississippi Sound. This project provides for maintenance of the existing channel to allow for the docking and servicing of commercial fishing and private recreational boats, with a draft up to six feet. It will continue to allow local fishing interests to market their commodities (principally shrimp) at Pass Christian Harbor, rather than at other deep-water ports. Temporary increase in turbidity near the dredge and disposal areas will have minimal effects on the environment. Deposition of spoil will result in temporary elimination of fish and crab habitat and temporary reduction in population of aquatic bottom organisms.
