Safety and cost parameters of automatic sprinkler systems in nursing homes are explored. Cases of fire in nursing homes are reported to illustrate the need for sprinklers. At the Plaza Nursing Center in Niles, Ill., each new staff member spends part of the orientation period studying the facility's fire safety manual and learning the evacuation plan, a copy of which is posted near each exit. The center holds 36 fire drills per year, one a month on all three shifts. Federal efforts are being made to investigate the effectiveness of sprinklers, nursing home facility compliance with the requirements of the Life Safety Code, DHEW's enforcement of life safety standards, State inspection procedures, the quality of trained personnel assisting patients during fires, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development's implementation of P.L. 93-204 which authorizes Government-insured loans for installing life safety equipment in skilled nursing and intermediate care facilities. Various studies on the efficacy of sprinklers are cited, including one conducted under the auspices of the American Health Care Association. It is estimated that the cost of installing automatic sprinkler systems ranges from $100 to $400 per patient, assuming a 200-square-foot head range. According to a General Accounting Office survey in 1974, there were 2,277 skilled nursing facilities, out of a total of 7,318, classified as not requiring sprinklers. The number of facilities that were required to have sprinklers but did not was 1,347. Although installation costs for sprinkler systems, are high, maintenance costs are minimal.
