Two Smoke Test Methods - A Comparison of Data
Smoke test methods have been developed in both UK and USA which are based on photometric measurements of smoke accumulation in closed chambers. The British Fire Research Station (FRS) procedure makes use of a large room approximately 37 times the volume of the box type chamber used in the test developed at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Tests have been conducted to compare the ability of the two measurement methods to assess smoke production from samples of selected materials. It is concluded that similar smoke measurements are obtained by use of the NBS procedure and use of the NBS specimen pyrolysis equipment in the room used for the FRS test.
