Preliminary report on the radiochemical analysis of Hanford pile effluent water
A program to determine the radioisotope content of the pile effluent water at the time of discharge into the Columbia River was initiated in late 1950 by the Control Unit of the Radiological Sciences Department. It was planned to determine the identity of the beta particle-emitting isotopes and, by continuing the analytical program routinely over a period of a year or two, to correlate periodic fluctuations in composition with changes in operating procedures, seasonal variations in river water composition, and with observed beta emitter concentrations at locations down river. Considerable outside work has been done to determine the radiochemical content of the pile effluent water but the data are incomplete and only a limited number of quantitative results are available concerning the identity of the various emitters present in the water. The preliminary results of this investigation are summarized herein. 19 refs., 3 figs., 4 tabs.
