Channels Transferring Information on Bureau of Reclamation Research
Increasing probable maximum flood estimates has made it imperative that water resource agencies provide more flood storage and/or larger capacity spillways. The option of passing an extreme flood event over the top of concrete dams has always been a possible alternative if no other solution could be found. However, recently the daring concept of protecting an embankment and allowing overtopping has been proposed. Anyone who has tried to dam a small stream by scooping up the bottom sediments knows that when the 'dam' is overtopped, it will fail almost instantly. There are thousands of embankment dams in the United States that would be damaged and could fail during an overtopping event. Reclamation has taken the technical lead in a cooperative dam safety research program to develop alternatives for reinforcing the downstream slope of embankment dams to permit overtopping.
