Accelerated Testing and Surface Cracking of Asphaltic Concrete Pavements
Transportation is of vital importance for a modern economy, and roads provide a major means of transportation. These roads are subject to increasing loads, due to the fastly growing amounts of traffic, gradual increase in truck size, and rise in average tyre pressure. These increasing loads favour the application of new, stronger, materials and innovative pavement designs. However, these new materials and designs exceed the limits of the experience on which the current mechanistic-empirical pavement thickness design methods are based. To test new materials and designs, before applying them in practice, Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) can play an important part, subjecting test pavements to a large number of (wheel) loads in a relatively short period of time. APT can also investigate the applicability (limits) of the basic models underlying the current pavement design procedures, to enable extrapolation of these procedures to novel materials and designs.
