Placement of a Sea Pavement Using Elemental Sulfur
A sulfur-extended asphalt (SEA) pavement using molten elemental sulfur ('Flower of sulfur') was placed in a commuter parking lot. This report is devoted to the design, mixing, and placement of the SEA material. Problems associated with temperature-maintenance of the liquid sulfur from holding tank to mixing drum are outlined in detail. The appearance and color of the mix were virtually identical to those of a conventional ConnDOT Class I. Measurements indicated insignificant emissions of noxious gases at both the plant and paver.
