Health Hazard Evaluation Report HETA 92-0348-2361, First United Methodist Church, Manchester, Tennessee
In response to a request from the Board of Trustees from the First United Methodist Church (SIC-8661) in Manchester, Tennessee an investigation was conducted on health risks associated with exposures during removal of old rock wool insulation and bat droppings located in the church's 5,000 square foot attic. Samples of bat droppings obtained from the attic were analyzed for the presence of the fungus Histoplasma-capsulatum; the fungus was identified in one of 16 samples tested. The author concludes that a health risk existed during removal activities due to potential exposures to Histoplasma-capsulatum and possibly aerosolized rock wool. The author recommends that the rock wool and bat droppings be sprayed with water before and during removal activities. The use of NIOSH approved full facepiece powered air purifying respirators and protective clothing during removal activities is also recommended.
