Fatigue Strength of Long-Term Weathered Rolled Beams
Nineteen rolled beams fabricated from A7 steel were fatigue tested in air after being exposed to the environment in a bare condition for about 25 years. It was found that the combined effects of section loss and pitting reduced the fatigue strength of the test beams in the study to that of Category C. The mean reduction in fatigue strength was 39 percent, a value larger than the reduction in fatigue strength of at most 26 percent for rolled tensile specimens fabricated from ordinary and weathering steels that were tested in previous studies after up to six years of exposure.
