Planning Water Supply Projects: The Systems Estimate
A much greater degree of accuracy can be obtained at the conceptual design stage with the Systems Estimate. The project could be examined at a greater level of detail, considering individual portions of the project at a time. The estimator would be able to determine the area of the building, using available design aids such as occupancy and building egress requirements, process equipment and tank layout, and special areas such as locker rooms and cafeterias. He would position the building on the site plan to establish the extent and nature of the unbuilt areas; access roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and landscaped areas. Out of this exercise would come the building footprint, the number of floors and the bay size.
