Closure of Academy Creek, Brunswick Harbor, Georgia
The following is proposed: Construction of a closure dam across Academy Creek; a canal connecting the upper reaches of Academy Creek with the upper reaches of East River; and, a dike along the west side of Academy Creek. Environmental impacts include: Reduction of shoaling in the navigation channels by 27 percent and elimination of shoaling in the critical reaches of East River; increasing the growth potential for Brunswick Harbor by maintaining Academy Creek for future harbor extension; divergence of the upper reaches of Academy Creek into the upper reaches of East River with consequential increased dilution of the Brunswick Sewage Disposal Plant's waste water effluent as it flows into Turtle River. Adverse environmental impacts include: Destruction of 7 to 8 acres of Spartina alterniflora marsh and the elimination of the benthic community in the immediate area of the Academy Creek closure dam; a temporary increase in turbidity of local waters from construction of the marsh dike and the closure dam; and, the removal of the uppermost dock located in Academy Creek.
