Timber Housing. A Study of Alternative Construction Methods
The report describes work carried out to investigate the viability of novel construction methods using timber as the load bearing structure for dwellings constructed in the UK. The evaluation of the alternative constructions has been made in a theoretical manner, each construction being evaluated for performance, buildability and commercial application. The evaluation of the alternative constructions has been divided into five sections: minor detail changes, alternative stud frame constructions at both existing and improved thermal insulation levels, large frame constructions, and radical alternative designs. The general trend in the future is considered to be building to higher levels of thermal insulation and a major section of the report has been devoted to establishing which construction methods are most buildable.
