Measurements of swash velocity, based on a system which times the uprush deceleration relative to an array of ground control markers, show a closer relationship to variations in beach slope than do conventional inshore wave measurements. Correlations between swash velocity and beach slope are, however, weaker under high wave conditions than when waves are smaller with longer periods. Swash velocity appears to be closely related to beach configuration and to the distribution of particle sizes over the beach-face. (Author)
