Evaluation of the Cultural Resources of the Montour Wildlife/Recreation Area, Gem County, Idaho
Six prehistoric archeological sites in the Montour Wildlife/Recreation Area, southwestern Idaho were conducted. The purpose of the investigations was to determine the eligibility of the sites for nomination to the National Register of Histroic Places, and provide recommendations for the management of prehistoric cultural resources in the project area. Of the six sites investigated. Four sites represent small, short-term camps, while one is a multiple component site possessing at least one house pit. This site provides the first documented evidence for house pits on a tributary of the Snake River in southwestern Idaho, and is thus considered eligible for National Register nomination. Obsidian hydration dates indicate a prehistoric cultural sequence in Montour Valley extending from protohistoric times to at least 4000 B.C.
