Designs for Rubble-Mound Breakwater Repair, Morro Bay Harbor, California; Hydraulic Model Investigation
The north breakwater at Morro Bay was severely damaged by wave action in 1956, 1957, and 1958, and a reconstruction project is proposed which involves rebuilding the head of this breakwater and strengthening the damaged portion of its trunk. Model tests were conducted to obtain data from which competitive designs could be developed for such repairs. Proposed designs involved protective cover layers of quarrystone, tetrapod, tribar, or pelican-stool armour units. The stability of various 1:53.7-scale model breakwater sections was tested in a concrete flume equipped with a plunger-type wave machine. Wave damage to the test sections was determined by visual observations and by sounding the sections before and after each test. Motion pictures and photographs were also made to show the elements of the test sections and to record important results. Satisfactory designs for the proposed repairs were developed. (Author)
